Biography

Joe Ludwig was born in Longreach and has worked in Cairns, Ipswich and Brisbane.

After a career as an Industrial Inspector and a Training Coordinator, Senator Ludwig was employed as a Senior Industrial Advocate for the Queensland Branch of The Australian Workers' Union and is a barrister. Senator Ludwig also served as an Officer in the Australian Army Reserve.

An ALP member since 1978, Joe was elected to the Senate in 1998. Following the 2004 election, Joe was appointed to the Shadow Ministry as Shadow Minister for Justice & Customs, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs after serving as a Parliamentary Secretary and Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate over the previous term. Joe was appointed Shadow Attorney-General on 9 March 2007.

Joe has recently been appointed Minister for Human Services and Manager of Government Business in the Senate, in the Rudd Labor Government.

Joe is married and lives in Brisbane with his wife and two daughters.
