Biography
Dr Herbert Vere 'The Doc' Evatt, was Federal Leader of the Labor Party from 1951 to 1960. In 1925 Evatt was elected as a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. He served there until 1930, when the Federal Scullin Labor government appointed him as the youngest-ever justice of the High Court of Australia.
He then returned to politics, serving as Attorney-General and Minister for External Affairs in the Labor governments of the 1940s. Dr Evatt played a leading role in the founding of the United Nations and was the first President of the General Assembly from 1948-1949.
