Biography

Karl Bitar was elected National Secretary of Australian Labor on 17 October 2008.

Karl was General Secretary of the Australian Labor Party (NSW Branch) between December 2007 and October 2008. He was Assistant General Secretary between 2004 and the end of 2007. He served as the NSW ALP State Organiser between 1999 and 2004.

Karl was the NSW Campaign Director for Kevin Rudd’s successful 2007 Federal Election Campaign.

Karl was also the Deputy Campaign Director for the 2007 NSW State Election Campaign. He was the Targeted Seats Coordinator for the 2003 State Election and Campaign Director for numerous successful State and Federal By-elections.

Karl has also worked on other political campaigns around Australia. He was part of Steve Brack’s successful Campaign in Victoria in 1999.

Prior to working for the ALP, Karl worked for the Department of Employment, Education and Training as Manager of Education and Research Services, and previously was a Senior Research Officer into labour market conditions and skill shortages.

In 1997, Karl was elected as Senior Vice President of NSW Young Labor after joining the Party in 1992.

Karl has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Research Methods & Statistics, and also has a Diploma in Public Relations.

He is 37 years old, married to Joanna, has a daughter Kristina, and lives in Burwood, Sydney.
