The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon
MP, has applauded a move to enhance the leadership skills of women in the Royal
Australian Navy (RAN).
Navy is implementing a Women’s Leadership Program which provides the opportunity for six women, from the rank of Leading Seaman to Commander, to participate in symposiums and events by the Australian Women and Leadership Forum (AWLF).
“The development of current and future female leaders in Defence is critical for the long-term sustainability of its personnel,” Mr Snowdon said.
“Cultural and attitudinal change is still required in the Australian Defence Force to fully utilise the potential of female service personnel, said Mr Snowdon.
“Women play an important role in the RAN, and I am extremely pleased to see Navy not only recognise that, but support and develop its female leaders,” Mr Snowdon said.
The program includes a two-day Symposium which will bring together high quality female leaders from both the private and public sector, to discuss cutting edge leadership techniques and thinking. The program will also involve two one-day workshops to examine leadership awareness and self development.
If the 2009 program is successful, the number of Navy women taking part in future forums could be increased.
Both Army and the Royal Australian Air Force are also implementing initiatives for female leadership development. These initiatives include the establishment of women reference groups, executive leadership coaching, and mentoring programs.
